Frequently Asked Questions

Why HEPA Air Purifiers?

HEPA vs Electrostatic vs Ionic

Only HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) air purifiers can remove a significant amount of allergens and pollutants from the air—up to 99% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns in size.

Electrostatic air purifiers do not use a filter, but rather an internal filtration system, which attracts charged particles. This internal filtration system has to be cleaned regularly, and over time becomes less efficient.

Ionic air purifiers charge particles in the air, making it easier for filters and cleaners to trap and can be effective when used in combination with a HEPA style filter. However, when used alone, it is less effective and can produce harmful levels of ozone in the process.

Isn't air pollution only outside?

When we think of significant air quality hazards, it is outdoor pollution that comes to mind. Having clean air to breathe seems more like a generalized environmental concern. As long as we avoid excessive amounts of smoke and have the inner sanctums of our homes to take refuge, most people likely view air quality as an issue that applies to the outdoors. Unfortunately, that is not the case. With an abundance of indoor air pollutants that can affect our health, education is key.

How can air quality be worse indoors than out?

One major factor that contributes to indoor air pollution is a lack of adequate ventilation. First and foremost, homes are built to be energy efficient, and that means sealing it up tight so ambient energy doesn't escape and hike up your utility bills. However, what is good for your finances is actually working against you when it comes to your lung and heart health.

Dust is more harmful than you think

The truth is that even though these various imperceptible particles are undetectable to the human eye and other senses, your lungs and heart are in jeopardy. Airborne particles (also known as Particulate Matter) are a mixture of microscopic solids and liquid droplets suspended in the air. Made up of a variety of particle pollution elements, this mixture can include dust, chemical fumes, gases, smoke and biological contaminants such as skin flakes, mold, dust mite and roach excrement, pollen, animal dander and various other sources. When inhaled, they pose a serious danger relating to the development or worsening of lung disease and can compromise your cardiovascular health. Allergy and asthma sufferers are particularly at risk, as well children and the elderly. Alen Air Purifiers are a simple solution to significantly reducing these very alarming health hazards.

Indoor air quality vs outdoor air quality

We tend to think we are safe from the dangers of air pollution when in the sanctity of our own homes. However, this is not the case. While indoor air is, on average, 2 to 5x more polluted than outdoor air, the two are still related. Outdoor air does travel inside at certain times, and local allergens as well as auto emissions or smog will also make their way into your home and become trapped. Increasing ventilation and air circulation with clean purified air is recommended by the EPA, and can be achieved with the regular use of Alen Air Purifiers.

    "happy with my decision"

put this in my bedroom for the following reasons: -i would wake up during the night and in the morning feeling slightly sick and groggy -my room (in an old brick building) smelled weird the day i plugged this unit in i noticed a difference in my bedroom. i don't wake up with a stuffy head and the air quality is noticeably better. in the end, i feel better about spending time in my bedroom and worry less about the air quality there. i don't know what the ionizing function does and have not turned it on. only used the air intake filter. i'm considering getting the t300 for my parents' living room. they have a wood stove that they love but burning wood leaves a grimy film on the windows and walls, not to mention what it must be doing for my parents' lungs. i would highly recommend this unit for a small room.

    "Nice little unit!"

Recently got a cat and purchased this air cleaner to put in a small bathroom where the litter box is located. It has done a nice job in removing litter odors and in "freshing" the air. I've also been pleasantly surprised on how quiet the unit runs; especially on its lowest fan setting. I'd recommend this air cleaner for any small room.

"Excellent air filter for the price"

This is not a "small" unit. At first, I thought it was meant for a desk or small stand, but this is 18" and a sleek 4-5" in width. The unit weighs next to nothing (and there's a smart cubby-handle) if you need to move it around often. Removing the filters is a cinch and anyone can do this. However, Alen does recommend using gloves when changing out the filter every 6 months (if the unit is used continuously.) The fan speed/noise factor is very good. The low setting is just quiet enough that one can easily sleep thru it (if placed in a bedroom.) The medium to high settings are probably going to be a bit too noisy if sleeping. It really depends on placement. At 10ft or so, you'll barely hear it running (on the low setting.) The controls are well-designed and are easily managed. (The lights from the controls may light up a dark room, so that might be another reason to leave it off at night.) One last note: the base of the unit does have a swivel. So the base stays one direction, and you can rotate the unit about 25 deg in each direction.

"Great Air Purifier - Small Rooms"
  7. Review by Paul Higginbotham

The T100 is a solid air purifier, if you have a small room under 150 square feet this purifier is a must buy. I've owned many different brands before & this one is very efficient, not too loud, and is cheap to maintain. Highly recommended.
