Seeking Health Active B12 Lozenge with L-5-MTHF

Seeking Health Active B12 Lozenge with L-5-MTHF (previously known as Sublingual Active B12 with Metafolin) combines high-potency amounts of the active forms of vitamin B12 and folate in a convenient sublingual tablet. Both of these water-soluble B-vitamins work together and need to be supplied in the diet in adequate amounts to support nervous system function and help maintain the normal metabolism of homocysteine, a potentially toxic amino acid metabolite that damages arteries.

Why choose Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF by Seeking Health ?

Absorption of vitamin B12 is facilitated by intrinsic factor, a natural protein produced by the parietal cells of the stomach lining. B12 can also be absorbed by an alternate mechanism that does not rely on intrinsic factor when high-potency amounts of 1,000 mcg or more are taken. Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF by Seeking Health provides 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 so that individuals without adequate intrinsic factor can enhance their intake of this essential B vitamin through oral supplementation.

Is Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF the same product as Sublingual Active B12 with Metafolin?

Yes. Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF is the same product as Sublingual Active B12 with Metafolin. Seeking Health has changed the name, but the formulation is still the same. You get all the same benefits as before.

Key Benefits and actions of Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF:

Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin:

Vitamin B12 is crucial to the formation of healthy red blood cells, energy production, nervous system support, cognitive function, and homocysteine regulation. Although cyanocobalamin is the most commonly used form of vitamin B12 in dietary supplements, it must be converted by enzymes into an active coenzyme form to be useful. Nutritional inadequacies, enzyme defects, and tissue abnormalities can reduce the body’s ability to synthesize the active forms of B12. In contrast, vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin is a “body-ready” form with metabolic benefits that may not be provided by other forms of vitamin B12. It appears that methylcobalamin may be particularly useful for individuals with impaired methylation capacity, including those with elevated homocysteine or neurological impairments.

Active form of folate :

This B-vitamin is crucial for generating red blood cells, regulating homocysteine metabolism, assisting DNA repair, and supporting neurological processes. Metafolin®* L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate (L-5-MTHF), an active form of folate, is included in this product to help ensure more immediate effects on metabolism compared to folic acid, the form of folate commonly used in fortified foods and supplements.

Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF sublingual tablets are sweetened naturally with mannitol and are free of added flavorings. The tablets dissolve in the mouth within a few minutes or may also be swallowed whole if desired. However, this supplement may be better absorbed when slowly dissolved under the tongue rather than swallowed whole. Individuals who have an increased risk for vitamin B12/folate deficiency are the elderly, vegetarians, and individuals with ulcers, Crohn’s disease, bacterial overgrowth, and other gastrointestinal disorders. This dietary supplement may be useful for individuals who may have difficulty absorbing vitamin B12 and folate and are looking for a safe and efficient method to enhance their supply of these bioactive forms of nutrients.

What makes Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF superior to other Active B12 supplements on the market?

Dietary B12 can be reliably obtained only from animal products and is a singularly difficult vitamin to absorb. Active B12 Lozenges with L-5-MTHF by Seeking Health are contained in fast-dissolving, sublingual tablets allowing quick release into the bloodstream. Folate deficiencies have been reported following bariatric surgery. This product may be especially beneficial for vegetarians and persons with impaired gastrointestinal absorptive function due to aging, illness, or surgery.

  1. MTHFR Review by Amber

I recently underwent blood work that came back showing I am compound heterozygous for the mutations C677T and A1298C. My doctor said that I should take 4mg of folic acid daily. My research has provided me with the information to know that this is not the fix and could in fact harm me. I have decided to take this supplement in lieu of cyanocobalamin and I feel great for making that decision. The pills are pleasant tasting, do not cause dry mouth and dissolve quickly. I would recommend them to anyone considering this alternate approach. (Posted on 11/6/12)

  3. RELIEF FROM FAMILY-WIDE NEUROLOGICAL STRESS Review by Dave

First let me say that the tiny pink tablets taste wonderful and are a pleasure to let dissolve in your mouth. They are received by everyone as a treat. Kids love to hold them in their mouths.

My family is loaded with people crippled by folate deficiency and the accompanying physical illnesses and mental stress. These vitamins have helped my family with anxiety and neurological stress. And they are probably helping us with all the physical symptoms of folate deficiency, that we have not measured, like bad cholesterol and hardening of the arteries.

Genetic testing suggests that everyone in my family has the MTHFR C677T genes. I have two copies. I did a lot of research and thought this vitamin combination was the best on the market. I have supplied many relatives and friends with them.

I find people in my town are very receptive to the idea that these vitamins can help them with their stress. Afterall 44% of Americans have at least one MTHFR gene for folate deficiency. Some very good reports are coming in, and I am ordering more vitamins to give away. When I buy 6 bottles, the price is very affordable and the shipping is free.

When people's systems have no methylfolate, their neurons are not firing, and their poor bodies cannot function. The most visible symptom of folate deficiency is anxiety, which can take many forms such as stress, obsessive compulsive behavior, bipolar, depression, and twitching. Some people explode. Others withdraw. Some kill themselves.

All of my family is deficient in serotonin. Prescriptions that boost serotonin in other people do not work for us, and some of my people get addicted to chemicals or destructive behaviors looking for relief. We have seen many early deaths, especially from those who get addicted to alcohol or prescription medication looking for relief.

Personally, I have known extreme anxiety in my life, but in recent years changed my diet so I unknowingly got enough methylfolate to become normal. So I did not experience a great change when taking this supplement. They do not make you "high" so you cannot feel the effect. However I endured one of the most stressful months of my life, and I felt very grounded and stable. So I think the vitamins helped me. Having a steady run of happy days since taking the vitamins seems to be more than a coincidence.

Another relative went through rough surgery, expecting to experience depression, but because of these vitamins she has felt very happy about her surgery.

Two others who have explosive rants have been calm and happy. Another who is often depressive has felt sunshiny. One couple reports making love again.

A relative who has had the most extreme bipolar turned to alcohol and it is killing her. The vitamins did not make any difference for her. But then alcohol destroys B vitamins.

People in my family have some of the most famous doctors in the nation. None of them knew about the MTHFR gene nor our specific need for methylfolate. One doctor detected my Dad's B-12 deficiency, and gave him injections with the wrong kind of B-12. It did nothing to help him. I do not think they give a blood test for methyl B-12, nor an injection for it.

Until the medical community recognizes our gene type, and the specific need for the methyl forms of these two vitamins, we need people like Dr. Ben to help us.

I plead with people, if this gene runs in your family, give your kids this supplement. Do not wait until folate deficiency shows itself in emotional or developmental patterns that they may be crippled with for life. I am making sure all my grandkids get their daily requirement, and hope to get them all gene tested. We do not need to have another generation of suffering people.

I purchased these because I have a difficult time swallowing pills. They dissolve quickly and taste pretty good, so I have been very happy with these tablets. Thanks.

  • Do you recommend taking both the sublingual B12/Metafolin and the Homocyste X 60 together? at 12/25/11 11:02 PM
    • I have 2 copies MTHFR C677T; severe chronic insomnia, depression, Hashimoto's, and unable to stop using benzodizepine for sleep. The pharmaceutical "Deplin" is 15MG of l-methylfolate. Is there any difference between Deplim (not over the counter) and these besides the dosage of these products which is much less. What do you suggest taking as a daily dosage and should both of these products be taken together? Have you had experience with insomnia being alleviated?

      Thanks,

      Susan
    • Hi Susan - I do not recommend taking these two together unless your doctor prescribes these amounts. Taking too much of a good thing is not good. Each person is different and the amounts taken vary immensely from person to person. I have had lots of experience alleviating insomnia. It is not that difficult to do - amazingly enough. It requires dietary changes, nutrients and lifestyle changes. Those with MTHFR make it more challenging but still possible - quite so. A consult is very much recommended here as there are too many factors at play here and a lot of education is needed. http://www.healthegoods.com/consult.html Best Dr Ben

  • DOSAGE FOR CHILDREN at 12/31/11 10:32 AM
    • I purchased a lot of Sublingual Active B12 with Metafolin to give to my parents, sibs, children, grandchildren and friends. We have a lot of 677TT in our family. Until we get everyone tested I am giving the same thing to everybody.

Our youngest child is 5 years old and they get older. Is one of these tablets a day too much for children? Should I cut them in half, or give them every other day?
    • Hello - For the younger children, I highly recommend that you break them in half and give it to them every other day for now. See how they do on that amount. If they begin to show signs of agitation or irritability, then reduce the amount to a quarter tablet and give every other day. If they show improvement on 1/2 tablet every other day, try giving every day. It is best to start very low and then work up. Excellent question. Best Dr Ben

  • DOSAGE FOR CHILDREN at 1/3/12 7:41 PM
    • I understand the dosage. Thank you. It is a very pleasant experience to take these sweet tiny sublingual tablets!

I am concerned that you said to watch for agitation or irritability. We never worried about that with multivitamins. I thought you couldn't get too much of these two vitamins.

Which can there be too much of? The Methylfolate or the Methylcobalamin?

If the Methylcobalamin of concern. And if it is the only component that is sublingual, would it be better for children to swallow the tablet and absorb less Methylcobalamin?

      Thanks!
    • Hello - It is the methylfolate - not the methylcobalamin - that may cause the agitation. With MTHFR mutations, the ability for the body to make active methylfolate is significantly reduced. This is why these tiny sweet tasting tablets are necessary ;) However, too much of a good thing is not good either. Multivitamins can also cause issues if they are a quality multivitamin. If they use poor forms of nutrients, then it is not likely to cause any imbalance - just in your wallet. If you start low and work up, you greatly reduce the risk of agitation. Best Dr Ben

  • CLARIFICATIONS at 1/7/12 6:09 PM
    • I am enjoying this tablet. It makes me feel grounded and secure. I have most of my relatives taking it now. I have two more questions that will help specific relatives:

      1) Is the Metafolin portion of this supplement absorbed sublingually, like the B-12 component is? Or does the Metafolin portion mainly get absorbed by the stomach when it is swollowed?

      2) You say that getting too much methylfolate can be "too much of a good thing", or as bad as not getting enough. This worries people. So we want to know, how dangerous is this? Is the resultant agitation and irritability just a feeling of discomfort? Or is the body suffering from an imbalance as much as it would be harmed by a deficiency? I have not been able to find where you clarify this disturbing concern anywhere on your site.

      Thanks! Dave
    • Hi Dave - Great questions. Let me quickly say that the population that I work with is very ill and highly sensitive so I am extra careful in my recommendations. The general population is not likely to experience any ill effects from taking methylfolate in higher amounts. According to the Alt Med Review: Side Effects and Toxicity of Methylfolate: In doses typically administered for therapeutic purposes, 5-MTHF is considered non-toxic. At doses of up to 50 mg daily, gastrointestinal complaints, insomnia, irritability, and fatigue have been mentioned as occasional side effects. Folic acid and 5-MTHF are considered safe during pregnancy, with a recommended intake of 800 mcg daily. To answer your questions: 1) The metafolin is going to be directly absorbed just like the methylfolate - sublingually. 2) Taking too much of anything is not good. Is taking too much methylfolate dangerous? In most people, no. It is not going to cause long term issues or death or a serious health concern - and not even any side effects. People take upwards of 50 mg of methylfolate daily for their depression or other mental dysfunctions. I am very conservative when it comes to dose suggestions as I don't like people being 'macho' and thinking that if they take 10 mg of methylfolate, that will be better than 1 mg. Sometimes yes it will and sometimes it won't. What could you experience if you do take too much methylfolate? - Irritability - Anxiety - Nausea - Headaches - Insomnia Will these symptoms go away upon reducing the levels of methylfolate or stopping it? - Yes Will these symptoms go away quickly? - In most people - yes - these symptoms will stop within 24 hours if not earlier. Can you 'neutralize' these side effects faster if they occur? - Many times, yes. How? - By taking niacin as niacin increases the absorption of methyl groups and also increases the breakdown of glutamte - which is the excitatory neurtransmitter. - By taking vitamin B6 - for many people - as B6 converts glutamate to GABA and GABA is the inhibitory neurotransmitter. As a physician, it is my job to: - Inform - Educate - Do no harm That said - I encourage people to start low and work up carefully to avoid these side effects. If I have 'scared' you - in a way, that is good - because you - and others - will take my recommendations to go slowly seriously. :) Methylfolate in high doses appears to be much safer than taking folic acid in high doses. As of now, research does not show any long term ill effects of excessive methylfolate - except in those who are bipolar. Why bipolar? Those with bipolar already have issues breaking down glutamate which is why they do so well on high doses of vitamin B3 (niacin) and I bet they'd also do very well on vitamin B6 and magnesium. I hope this has been informative and has reduced the anxiety of your relatives. My apologies for making your desire to help your family more difficult. I admire your kindness and desire to help them. Best, Dr Ben

  • Sublingual B12 with Metafolin at 2/4/12 12:33 PM
    • Hello,

Our family is taking Homocystex. Two in the family have two
copies of the C677T mutation. I have one copy of A and one of C. Would you advise I take Sublingual B12 with Metafolin with the
      Homocystex?

I read on another e-mail about the recommendation of NAC
for detoxing. Is this something one has to be on indefinitely
even if lab work shows a person after a course of NAC
      is free of heavy metals?

Is there anything else that you sell that could help someone
that has obsessive tendencies ? This person has been on 2 Metanx
for one year. The obsessive tendencies contain to plague this
family member. They have switched from Metanx to 4 Homocystex for 4 weeks. They are also taking 4 Thorne Nia-safe a day. The
Nia-safe seems to take the edge off, but the obsessiveness
      does not go away.
      I would appreciate any information.
      Thank you!
    • Hello - They may be overmethylating themselves which is why the niacin is helping them. They also may have a COMT or MAO A or CBS mutation which is increasing the issue of the MTHFR mutation. I greatly suspect that they are taking too much methylfolate and that a lower amount of methylfolate should be used along with an increased amount of niacin in the form of nicotinic acid. There are other things also of course which need to be evaluated by their doctor. I am happy to work with you and provide more specifics via a consult. I cannot provide more information than this unfortunately without more information from your end. You may schedule a consult by calling 800-689-8221 Best Dr Ben

  • 'acute' applications at 4/8/12 7:41 AM
    • I'm chemically hypersensitive and recently had exposure to lawn chemicals that effected me badly. In such a case, is there something I can take to help my body deal with such exposures when they accidentally occur? (I'll be starting the recommended folate 800mcg & methyl B12 1000 mcg next week).

      Thank You *^^*

    • Hello - In situations like this, it is best to contact the manufacturer of the lawn chemicals and learn what the MSDS (Manufacturer Safety Data Sheet) states to do. A sauna may be very effective here along with liver support, coconut oil, and fish oil. Consider taking: - Liver Nutrients: 1 capsule with breakfast and 1 with dinner. - Optimal Fish Oil: 2 capsules twice daily with a meal Do tell your doctor about your experience. If you'd like to find a doctor trained in chemical sensitivity, I recommend you visit www.naturopathic.org or www.aaemonline.org In health, Dr Ben

  • Medication in pregnancy at 7/28/12 10:38 AM
    • I was going to try and supplement with the vitamins for the amount in metanx, so I would not need a prescription, during my next pregnancy. I am currently on folgard and have read it is not really good to be taking for compound hetero MTHFR, is it ok to take this supplement twice a day and additional l-methlfolate to bring up to the dosing of one tablet of metanx? I would also include a supplement for the B6. Thanks
    • Hello -

If it is ok with your doctor, one may take the equivalent amounts of methylfolate, methylcobalamin and vitamin B6 as found in Metanx.

Consider:- Active B12 with Metafolin- L-5-MTHF- Magnesium Plus: contains 20 mg of pyridoxal-5-phosphate per capsule along with 100 mg of magnesium.

One may also consider HomocysteX as it contains all three nutrients

  • Why Magnesium Stearate? at 9/4/12 9:01 AM
    • I just read an article on your website about Magnesium Stearate...I thought if I purchased your product, it wouldn't contain this ingredient...but it's in your B-12. I haven't checked your other products, but I'm doing that now. I don't want any products that contain MS.
    • Hello -

Seeking Health does not use magnesium stearate in products that are in capsules.

Magnesium stearate is only found in products by Seeking Health which are:- chewable- sublingual- extended release

We are working on developing all products without magnesium stearate but in chewable, sublingual and extended release, it is very difficult to do so.

Since the absorption is excellent in sublingual, chewable and extended release, we are much less concerned about magnesium stearate in these products.

You will NEVER find magnesium stearate in any vegetarian capsule or gelatin capsule by Seeking Health.

      In health,

      Dr Ben
