- Gastritis, H.Pylori, Hypochlorhydria and GERD at 3/22/12 4:13 PM

Thanks for patiently answering my questions day after day. I have been using your advice to treat my gastritis (a small number of H.Pylori was seen in endoscopy). My gastritis symptoms have improved over the last 2 months although not completely healed yet. I am not planning to go the triple therapy route yet since there was no ulcer detected in the endoscopy.
I have a feeling that I might have hypochlorhydria. Is there a way to test it at home? My gastritis as I said is better but not healed completely so would you suggest any supplement for hypochlorhydria or should I wait till it has healed completely?
Also, does H.pylori in the stomach cause acid reflux? Since H.Pylori can neutralize stomach acid, will that lead to hypochlorhydria and eventually GERD?

PPat - Hi PPat - If gastritis has begun healing, you can try taking a little lemon juice in water - juice of a 1/4 lemon in a 1/4 cup of water. SIP SLOWLY 15 minutes before you eat. Stop at the first sign of warmth in your stomach. That will initiate stomach acid production. H Pylori is a result of acid reflux or hypochlorhydria. It is not a causal factor. If the stomach stays permanently hypochlorhydric, then the H pylori will continue to shelter there - so increasing acidity there is needed - just have to be careful with the gastritis. Best Dr Ben
