According to Swiss researchers, caffeine taken in prior to exercise lessens the blood flow through the heart.
This is not handy as during exercise, muscles need increased blood flow to provide oxygenation, nutrients and removal of metabolites.
There was not a noticeable difference in coronary blood flow in caffeine drinkers who just sat around - only during exercise.
The Swiss researchers said however that their research could also “raise safety questions in patients with reduced coronary flow reserve, as seen in coronary artery disease, particularly before physical exercise and at high-altitude exposure".
