My daughter is three and has low muscle tone. Today I went to to a health store and the naturopathic doctor said I should give my daughter harmonized protein is it safe for a three year old?

I recommend that you visit a licensed naturopathic physician in a clinical setting for a more complete evaluation of your daughter.

Children aged three do not have much muscle tone. How did you come to the conclusion that she has low muscle tone?

Perhaps she is weak and uncoordinated? Is that what you mean?

Simply increasing protein content to a 3 yr old with low muscle tone without a thorough evaluation is not a good idea.

You are wise in asking first if giving harmonized protein to your 3 yr old daughter is safe. I commend you for that.

Protein in a concentrated form like harmonized protein may be hard on your daughter's kidneys if not given in the right dose.

The reason I highly recommend that you visit a licensed naturopathic physician to evaluate low muscle tone is because there are numerous reasons for low muscle tone beyond low protein intake.

Some reasons for low muscle tone are:
- inactivity
- poor digestion of protein coming from either low stomach acid or insufficient pancreatic enzyme release
- poor assimilation of amino acids due to an unhealthy digestive tract
- poor dietary intake
- improper chewing of food

Health store 'doctors' are quite dangerous in my opinion. Many work on commission.

This may seem as an oxy moron given that I am a doctor and CEO of a health store online. However, I am a licensed primary care physician and I do not recommend products when I notice there may be something a physician needs to see firsthand.

Low protein intake may definitely be a contributing cause to your daughter's low muscle tone. However, without a physician's evaluation, I would not recommend that you give your daughter concentrated protein.

For now, ensure that your daughter eats healthy balanced meals with protein, complex carbohydrates and try to limit the amount of sugar.

Should you have further questions, please do ask.

Do let me know how your daughter is in a month or so.

In health,
Dr Ben
