Seeking Natural Products to Heal Irritated Rectum

Dear Dr. Ben,

I saw a specialist yesterday for "leaky stools", i.e. passing small amounts of soft stool inadvertently. The doctor recommended Metamucill.

I'd rather try one of your products for firming stool and for healing my irritated rectum. What do you recommend?

Sincerely,

S.B.

Suggestions to Naturally Treat "Leaky Stools" by Dr. Ben

Hi S.B.,

First off, good thinking on your part to be proactive in trying to identify the root cause instead of just treating the symptom.

Leaking stools can be due to a variety of causes; however, a good place to start is with a potent probiotic.

I highly recommend that you try Seeking Health's ProBiota 12 Powder.

Take 1/2 teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder at dinner time. You may put it directly into your mouth or mix it in an ounce of water and drink. It has a nice nutty taste so it goes down easily.

The ProBiota 12 Powder should improve the stool bulk quite quickly.  Take ProBiota 12 Powder until the bottle is finished.

Once finished, switch to Seeking Health's ProBiota 12 capsules and take 1 capsule at dinner time as a maintenance dose. ProBiota 12 capsules will help maintain stool bulk and proper digestive flora.

To help soothe the area locally, try adding some Wise Woman Herbals Bottoms Up Salve as needed.

If you have any suspected food intolerances or allergens, I recommend you avoid them for at least two weeks.

A common irritating food is wheat.

Do not eat any foods containing wheat for two weeks.

Then, after the two weeks without wheat, eat wheat at each meal in fairly substantial amounts.

If you show symptoms of leaky stools or other symptoms that were not present until you ate the wheat, this means you need to avoid eating wheat for at least 6 months.

Wheat is a very common food allergen that is hidden.

I also highly recommend that you get a Celiac Panel done.

Celiac's disease is on the rise and one symptom is leaky stool.

In summary:

  • ProBiota 12 Powder - 1/2 teaspoon at dinner time until the bottle is gone.
  • Switch to ProBiota 12 capsules and take 1 capsule each evening at dinner time as a maintenance dose.
  • Apply Bottoms Up Salve as needed.
  • Do not eat wheat for 2 weeks
  • Eat wheat at each meal after the two week avoidance. Record and identify symptoms.
  • If symptomatic from eating wheat, avoid it for at least 6 months.
  • Get tested for Celiac's disease and if positive, avoid wheat completely.

Keep me posted how you do with the above products and suggestions. I am confident you will see improvements.

If you do not see improvements after following the suggestions for three weeks, then you may need a GI Stool laboratory test to see what is going on.

I can help with that as well. Let me know.

Benjamin Lynch, ND
