L-methylfolate is known as a trimonoamine modulator (TMM) which boosts the synthesis of monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine). Correcting suboptimal folate levels in the brain is necessary to boost the production of key neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine).

Questions on 5 MTHF 10 mg (methylfolate) - Metabolic Maintenance

Sort by Descending
  • Prescription drug versus supplement at 8/3/11 12:47 PM
    • Can you tell me please how does this product compares to Deplin 15 mg?
    • Deplin uses the same active folate, 5-MTHF, as 5-MTHF by Metabolic Maintenance. 5-MTHF = L-methylfolate The only difference between Deplin and 5-MTHF by Metabolic Maintenance is the dosage AND purity. Deplin contains a TON of 'added' ingredients which, in my mind, are harmful: Deplin® 7.5mg– L-methylfolate [6(S)-5-MTHF](Metafolin®), Dibasic Calcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Silicified Microrystalline Cellulose 90,Silicified Microcrystalline Cellulose HD90, Opardy ll Blue85F90748 (Polyvinyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide [color], PEG 3350, Talc and FD&C Blue #2[color]),Magnesium Stearate (Vegetable Source), and Carnauba Wax. Deplin® 15mg - L-methylfolate [6(S)-5-MTHF](Metafolin®), Dibasic Calcium Phosphate Dihydrate, Silicified Microrystalline Cellulose 90, Opardy ll Orange 85F43102, (Polyvinyl Alcohol, Titanium Dioxide [color], PEG 3350, Talc and FD&C Yellow #6[color]), FD&C Red #40[color] and FC&C Blue #2[color],Magnesium Stearate (Vegetable Source), and Carnauba Wax. I also do not agree that one should only take active folate such as 5-MTHF. There are other nutrients needed in order to reduce homocysteine and encourage the methylation reaction to move forward. These ingredients are: - B2 riboflavin - B6 pyridoxal-5-phosphate - TMG - B12 methylcobalamin This is why I formulated Homocystex. There are no fillers or other 'added' ingredients in Homocytex either. Homocystex contains a lower amount of active 5-MTHF for safety. It is still very effective at this lower dose because it contains all the other nutrients required to help reduce homocysteine and encourage methylation. It is not a good idea to take only 5-MTHF without these other ingredients as this requires more active folate. Taking more active folate is not a good idea as having too much of a 'good thing' - especially folate - can lead to problems. Here is Homocystex: http://www.healthegoods.com/homocystex.html I recommend you consider taking 2 capsules of Homocystex with breakfast and 2 at lunch. In health, Dr Ben

  • Deplin verses suppliments at 3/30/12 7:44 PM
    • Doesn't this suppliment have much more folate than the Deplin of 15 mg/s. Isn't that too much. How would one know how much folate they actually need if they have what I have been diagnosed with -a genetically altered gene. How much is too much for someone to take and what would be some of the symptoms of taking too much?
    • Hello - Great question. I don't recommend taking high amounts of methylfolate right off. I recommend you read these articles: 1. • How does this product compare to Metafolin? at 11/1/12 6:44 AM
    • Hello
1.Can I be confident this product is as pure and stable as Metafolin?
      It says:
      L-Methylfolate 10 mg -
      -derived from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate 20 mg -

2.What are the other 10 mg of 5-methyltetrahydrofolate?

      Thank you
      Katrine
    • Hi Katrine,

Thank you for your great questions.

#1:  I recommend reading this link to learn more about the differences between different forms of MTHF.  I think you will find it very helpful.  http://mthfr.net/l-methylfolate-methylfolate-5-mthf/2012/04/05/

#2:  According to the company, Metabolic Maintenance, the L-Methlyfolate is in the racemic form, so to yield 10mg you need to consume double the amount, hence the 20mg.

      Hope this helps!
