CALCIUM (CITRATE/MALATE) are the calcium salts of citric and malic acid. These chelated forms of calcium are water-soluble compounds andtherefore highly absorbable and bioavailable. Calcium is the most abundantmineral in the body, with the majority of body reserves being in the bones andteeth. Depletion of bone calcium occurs when blood levels of calcium are belowoptimal level. This repeated borrowing of bone calcium can lead to porous bonetissues and increase the risk for fractures and breakage. Although much of bonemass is acquired during adolescence and early adulthood, maintaining adequateintake of calcium throughout life can have profound effects on enhancing bonedensity. In studies of post-menopausal women, oral calcium supplementation hasbeen shown to reduce bone loss and fractures.

MAGNESIUM (GLYCINATE/CITRATE) are chelated forms ofmagnesium and are also well absorbed and bioavailable. Magnesium is the fourthmost abundant mineral in the body and supports numerous functions includingenzyme regulation, calcium transport, and parathyroid hormone activity.Magnesium is also a critical component of the structure of the bone matrix, anddeficiency is linked to an increase in bone brittleness and fracture risk. Itis estimated that nearly 60% of the U.S. population does not meet the RDA formagnesium, leading to possible negative effects on cardiovascular,neurological, and bone health. Studies have shown that magnesiumsupplementation among post-menopausal women can support bone density andsuppress bone turnover.

VITAMIN D3 (CHOLECALCIFEROL) is the biologically activeform of vitamin D. Cholecalciferol is a pro-hormone that has multiple roles inmaintaining bone mineralization and serum calcium levels. Active vitamin Dinduces proteins that serve to enhance calcium transport across intestinalmucosal cells. In response to low serum calcium, vitamin D also stimulatescalcium reabsorption in the renal tubules to help maintain calcium levels.

VITAMIN K2 (MENAQUINONE-7) plays an essential role inmodulation of aberrant calcium metabolism. Abnormal deposition of calcium inarteries and heart valves is a major risk factor for both cardiovasculardisease and osteoporosis. Vitamin K2 is a dependent cofactor for carboxylationof the human matrix GLA protein (MGP), which is a major inhibitor of arterialcalcification. Vitamin K2 as menaquinone-7 has been shown to be effective formaintaining calcium balance by helping keep calcium in the bones and out of thevascular media. Among Japanese populations with high dietary intakes of vitaminK2, reduced incidence of bone fractures and bone density issues has beenobserved.

BORON improves the metabolism of calcium, phosphorous, andmagnesium. Boron supplementation has been shown to reduce urinary excretion ofcalcium and magnesium and support hormone balance in post-menopausal women.

HORSETAIL (EQUISETUM ARVENSE) is a natural organic sourceof water soluble colloidal silica. Silica has been shown to strengthen the bonematrix connective tissue by enhancing cross-linking of collagen strands. Agingand decline in estrogen levels can reduce absorption of silica, indicating thatsupplementation may be of benefit.
