• EFAs - Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids are compounds that the body needs, but can not synthesize itself. Linolenic and linoleic acids are the building blocks for specialized fats called Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

Both omega-3 and 6 essential fatty acids are needed for normal functioning of our bodies. The ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 EFAs is important for health and wellbeing. Omega-6s complete with omega-3s for use in the body, and our standard American diet is very heavy in omega-6 fats. Omega-3 EFA supplements can bring this ratio back to balance.

Fish that feed on algae accumulate omega fats in very high levels, and fish or krill oil is very often the first thing people think of when considering an EFA supplement. Vegans and vegetarians can also get plenty of omegas from non-fish sources such as flax seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, and nuts like almonds and walnuts.
