Chromium picolinate is a highly utilizable form of chromium, promoting healthy glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as enzyme activation.*

Glucose and Fat Metabolism: Optimal levels of chromium are essential for proper glucose and lipid metabolism.* One small study suggests that chromium picolinate may reduce the risk of insulin resistance, and therefore possibly may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. FDA concludes, however, that the existence of such a relationship between chromium picolinate and either insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes is highly uncertain.

    • Is this dosage safe for a 60 year old diabetic?
    • Hello and thank you for your question.  Research on Type 2 diabetes using Chromium picolinate have used anywhere from 200 to 1000 mcg (divided into doses) per day.  Chromium helps insulin work more efficiently by allowing blood glucose to move from the blood into the cells.  In research, Chromium picolinate has shown a significant reduction in fasting blood sugar levels and in post-meal blood sugar levels.  Because chromium picolinate drops blood sugar levels, please consult with your health care provider before taking this supplement, especially if you already take glucose lowering medications.  The combination of the glucose lowering medications and chromium picolinate can cause hypoglycemia.  Therefore, start with a lower dosage of the chromium and gradually increase.  Always monitor your blood sugar levels.
