Methylation the addition of a methyl group (CH4 one carbon attached to three hydrogens) to another molecule is an essential and vital biochemical process within the human body that is involved in a large number of biochemical pathways involving neurotransmitters, detoxification, cardiovascular health, eye health, muscle health, bone health, and redox balance. A number of specific nutrients are necessary for methylation to occur normally.

Methyl-Guard Plus contains higher amounts of 5MTHF (the active form of folate), pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (active B6), and methylcobalamin (active B12), than Thorne's original Methyl-Guard. They have also added riboflavin 5'-phosphate (the active form of vitamin B2) for its positive effect on homocysteine metabolism and methylation.* These ingredients provide the necessary nutrients the body uses to push forward the process of methylation. Methyl-Guard Plus is more concentrated, so your patients will appreciate the recommended daily amount of three capsules, which will improve compliance. Thorne's original Methyl-Guard is still available.

  1. Brain Fog and No Energy Review by Tami

My family has MTHFR mutations and we tried this brand after using Douglas Lab. Brand for Methylfolate and P5P and for Now Brand of Methylcobalamin. We crashed taking Thorne. Our bodies couldn't use it like the metafolin in Douglas Lab. brand. It just took one day on this supplement to know it wasn't right for us. Even called Thorne to talk to biochemist who said that it did indeed have methylated form in it, but our bodies (all 6 of us) crashed in one day taking it. We had extreme brain fog and tiredness. • Methyl Guard Plus or Homosyctex? at 9/24/11 3:18 PM
    • Hi, I am heterozygous for c677t MTHFR. Which supplement would be better for me? Methyl Guard Plus or Homocystex ? And what would be the appropriate dose? And what multivitamin would be good? Are there any other supplements that I need as well? I am a breastfeeding mother.
      Thanks,
    • Hello - Methyl Guard Plus and HomocysteX are quite similar. HomocysteX is less expensive per serving. Methyl Guard Plus recommends three capsules per day which is very potent while HomocysteX recommends one capsule per day or as recommended by your health professional. Three capsules of HomocysteX is nearly identical to the three capsules of Methyl Guard Plus. Only difference is about 200 mcg less of methylated folate. http://www.healthegoods.com/homocystex.html Prenatal Pro is the prenatal that I recommend: http://www.healthegoods.com/prenatal-pro-180-vegetarian-capsules.html It uses active nutrients which are needed for those with MTHFR. I also recommend the use of Vitamin D360 which is a liquid vitamin D3. It contains 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 per DROP. According to Dr Cannell of Vitamin D3 Council recommends 5000 IU to 6000 IU per day for breastfeeding and pregnant mothers. Make sure to test your vitamin D3 levels every three to five months or as recommended by your doctor. Vitamin D360 is found here: http://www.healthegoods.com/vitamin-d360-by-seeking-health.html I also recommend the use of ProBiota 12 capsules for you - 1 capsule after dinner - to maintain a healthy immune system and digestion. http://www.healthegoods.com/probiota-12-maximum-support-50-billion-cfus-twelve-species-probiotic-60-vegetarian-capsules-seeking-health.html I also HIGHLY recommend the use of ProBiota Infant for your child. Consider 1/4 teaspoon in the evening after the last meal or anytime that works for you. It is best to take probiotics after dinner but in regards to an infant - just make sure they get it. To give ProBiota Infant, simply put 1/4 teaspoon on the end of your finger and then place in baby's mouth. Or simply drop 1/4 teaspoon in a soft silicone baby spoon. It is a nice tasting powder so you should receive no fuss. http://www.healthegoods.com/pro-biota-infant-powder-60-grams-seeking-health.html Maintain ProBiota Infant until their 2nd birthday. Then switch to ProBiota 12 Powder and give 1/8th of a teaspoon. Ensure you are taking a quality fish oil that contains high amounts of EPA and DHA. I recommend Optimal Fish Oil by Seeking Health. It is potent and it contains lipase which makes it easier to digest and absorb. http://www.healthegoods.com/optimal-fish-oil-60-softgels.html Should you need additional active folate, consider L-5-MTHF by Seeking Health. Your doctor will know if you need more active folate than what is found in the Prenatal Pro and Homocystex. http://www.healthegoods.com/l-5-mthf.html In health, Dr Ben
