Seeking Health Optimal Magnesium

Magnesium deficiency is common among all age groups. Food processing is a major cause of magnesium depletion. As much as 85% of the magnesium content of whole wheat is lost when refined to white flour. Deficiencies may also be caused by excessive calcium intake, moderate-to-excessive alcohol consumption, gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, kidney dysfunction, and the use of some diuretics, estrogens, and corticosteroids.

Magnesium has numerous beneficial actions in the body, including:

Muscle Relaxation  - Magnesium exerts a relaxant effect on muscles by inhibiting calcium influx and smooth muscle contraction.

Bone Formation - Magnesium is essential for bone matrix formation and helps maintain bone strength. Magnesium deficiency can result in low calcium and cause vitamin D abnormalities.

Cardiovascular Function - Magnesium may play an important role in regulating blood pressure and cardiac rhythm and assisting cardiac muscle function.

Blood Sugar Metabolism - Magnesium is involved in glucose metabolism and insulin action. More than 30% of diabetics are low in magnesium. Low levels have been linked to insulin resistance and abnormal glucose tolerance.

Many common magnesium supplements, including magnesium oxide and inorganic magnesium salts, have limited solubility and bioavailability and may induce adverse gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea in some individuals. In contrast, Optimal Magnesium contains a well-tolerated form of magnesium that is easy to digest and absorb.

Optimal Magnesium contains magnesium pre-attached to an amino acid carrier. This allows it to pass readily through the intestinal epithelium. In addition, although absorption of free magnesium ion is susceptible to interference by other nutrients, absorption of magnesium chelate is not disrupted by other nutrients. As a natural absorptive form, magnesium amino acid chelate is exceptionally well tolerated and has a very low incidence of adverse side effects.

Optimal Magnesium can be used by adults or children who wish to increase daily magnesium intake.

Suggested Use:One to two capsules daily with food or as directed by physician.

About Seeking Health, the company

Dr. Ben Lynch, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Seeking Health, is a naturopathic physician. While majoring in Cell and Molecular biology at the University of Washington, Dr. Ben took a trip through the South Pacific and Southeast Asia that changed his outlook on traditional medicine, and his life.

During this trip, Dr. Ben hiked through the forests, mountains and coasts of Tasmania, worked a cattle ranch in the Outback of Australia, and volunteered with Mother Theresa in Calcutta. He lived in Fiji with a family having no electricity or plumbing, experienced the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India, worked a fruit orchard in New Zealand, and returned to America with an impression of a different form of medicine than he had ever experienced with his mainstream medical education.

This profound experience led Dr. Ben to Bastyr University, and he studied the Mind-Body Connection, Environmental Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Epigenetics.

Dr. Ben saw the huge need for people to obtain foundational nutrients, and Seeking Health was born. Without foundational nutrients, biochemical dysfunction occurs and causes symptoms. Doctor after doctor and person after person do not understand the absolute requirement for our bodies to have the tools to maintain function.

  • • Without water, we die.
  • • Without food, we die.
  • • Without probiotics, we get digestive disorders.
  • • Without multivitamins, we become depressed, fatigued and sick.

“If one supports their bodily systems, especially their digestion and mental health, with pure, highly absorbable, well-formulated nutrients, the ability to remain healthy and vital significantly increases. We want your foundation rock solid and we provide the tools to do so.”

-Dr. Ben Lynch, founder of Seeking Health

Seeking Health believes that the root cause for many health conditions and supplements stem from ineffective digestion, environmental exposures, poor diet, and lack of a healthy social outlet and inlet.

  • • Once digestion is restored and optimized with the best probiotics, digestive enzymes, stomach acid and intestinal repair nutrients, one is able to absorb nutrients from foods and high quality multivitamins.
  • • Once environmental exposures are reduced, one is able to reduce toxic burden which then frees up nutrients to work in promoting health and preventing disease.
  • • Once diet is optimized, nutrients flood in, energy increases, blood sugar stabilizes and the immune system balances.
  • • Creating a social outlet and inlet allows the parasympathetic nervous system to regain control over the reactive sympathetic nervous system, allowing countless nutrients to be used proactively and in a protective manner instead of being wasted on producing stress hormones.

Seeking Health is here to see you get better, and stay better. Their true passion is prevention.

Seeking Health is based in Bellingham, Washington and operated and managed by a team dedicated to bringing you better health through the best quality supplements, prebiotics, probiotics, and multivitamins.

Seeking Health brings you effective formulas produced without preservatives, colors, titanium dioxide, coloring, or gluten.

    • I normally take Dr. Gillham's natural calm for constipation. I take a good probiotic which helps, but sometimes I need more than that. Would this product be a good replacement for the natural calm or some other product you offer? Thank you.
    • Melanie - Magnesium is always an excellent choice for those who are constipated. Consider taking 1 to 3 capsules in the evening before bed. You may simply be magnesium deficient. I caution you from taking Magnesium Oxide. This form of Magnesium is the worst and will simply cause diarrhea and a loss of electrolytes - including magnesium. It is a horrific magnesium supplement and should only be allowed as a laxative - as that is the ONLY benefit of magnesium oxide. There are numerous other causes of constipation: - eating and drinking at the same time dilutes digestive enzymes - not chewing well enough before swallowing - food intolerances - especially dairy and wheat - avoid those - eating while on the run or doing other things prevents digestive enzyme secretion - eating dried or processed foods vs whole foods - not enough fiber - eat more veggies and fruits Other supplement suggestions: - lack of bile flow - consider Taurine if you feel more constipated after eating fats, oils or nuts or seeds. Taking 2 capsules of Taurine in the evening with dinner will stimulate bile production and encourage healthy bowel movements. http://www.healthegoods.com/taurine-100-capsules.html - lack of digestive enzymes - consider Pro-Digestion Intensive if you experience routine gas and bloating from almost anything you eat. Start with 1 capsule only during larger meals and see how you do from this. http://www.healthegoods.com/pro-digestion-intensive-120-vegetarian-capsules.html - if you have a lot of belching after meals, you may have low stomach acid. Consider taking 1 to 4 capsules of PreGestion during meals. Start with 1 capsule with a meal and only increase if you do not feel any warmth in your stomach and you are still constipated. http://www.healthegoods.com/pregestion-seeking-health.html These should help significantly! • Thank you. Dr. Gillham's natural calm is actually magnesium citrate which I am guessing is different than magnesium oxide? The calm has caused diarrhea on occasion if I take too much, but if I take the right amount I don't have that issue. It's deciding how much I need though. I may try yours instead though. Do you know if magnesium citrate is safe? Thanks!
    • Melanie - Magnesium citrate is a pretty good form of magnesium and it is safe. It is derived from corn though so it can be problematic for some. Magnesium citrate is also not as well absorbed as magnesium glycinate. I would start using the same amount of Optimal Magnesium as you were of Natural Calm. It is best to take magnesium more often than simply a large dose. Consider taking 2 capsules of Optimal Magnesium two or more times a day - as needed. Keep in mind that magnesium competes with calcium so make sure you eat calcium-rich foods such as dark-leafy veggies and nuts/seeds. Best Dr Ben

    • Thank you. I think I will try taking e-lyte as well. Would you recommend combining them or should the magnesium in e-lyte be enough? Thanks!
    • I would combine them initially and then switch to the E-Lyte after a month of being on Optimal Magnesium.

  • Melanie at 1/30/12 10:17 AM
    • Dr. Ben,
I am having a hard time trying to find a way to fit e-lyte into our budget. Is there an alternative solution I can mix myself that would be more cost effective for those who can't afford to drink e-lyte daily? Thanks!
    • Hi Melanie - Perhaps seaweed soup? Boil seaweeds and drink the broth. Do not ingest the seaweed itself. A small amount is ok but a large amount will cause diarrhea. I do recommend drinking Elyte at least a few times a week. Personally, it is the only mixture that alleviates my muscle spams in my shoulder and I've tried countless blends. Best Dr Ben
