• Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities, including food allergies and food intolerance, are a reaction to food or food additives.

Food allergies involve the immune system, which identifies food molecules as potentially harmful and toxic, and begins a chain reaction that can lead to anaphylactic reactions. Most food allergies are associated with dairy, eggs, peanuts, soy, wheat, fish, shellfish, and tree nuts.

Food Intolerance does not involve the immune system, and can include difficulty breaking down or digesting a particular food molecule, such as Lactose Intolerance. Lactase enzymes help the body to digest lactose. Other common food intolerances include Tyramine, an amino acid that is linked to migraine headaches. Intolerance to food additives can be avoided by eating organic foods as close to their natural state as possible.

Gluten sensitivity is often confused with Celiac disease. More severe than gluten intolerance, it is an autoimmune digestive condition. Celiac sufferers must adhere to a lifetime gluten-free diet. Read more about Celiac disease disease and gluten intolerance in our blog!
