You many know that it is your largest organ, but did you know that the average person's skin has a surface area of 18 square feet?

Also known as the integumentary system, your skin works to waterproof, cushion and protect your body, regulates body temperature, prevents dehydration and excretes waste. Your skin also houses sensory receptors that feel sensation, pain and pressure.

This incredible organ can be prone to conditions, disorders, and injuries. Dermatologists are doctors that specialize in skin health, addressing skin injuries like burns, wounds, and scar prevention, or  conditions like acne, dandruff, rosacea, lichen planus, psoriasis, and eczema, fungal infections like jock itch or tinea versicolor, or viral conditions like warts and cold sores. Dermatologists also specialize in melanoma, or cancers of the skin.

Vitamin C is an antioxidant that also plays a role in collagen production. Omega-3 fatty acids help to build up the lipid-based membranes that hold in water and nutrients in skin. Biotin is responsible for forming the basis for skin, and a deficiency in this skin promoting nutrient can lead to dermatitis.

Don't forget to nourish your skin on the outside, too. Soap-free cleansers and natural skincare products ensure that you are feeding your skin with loving ingredients, and not artificial or toxic chemicals, perfumes, or dyes.
