From Dr Ben:
Over the last ten years I have tried countless multivitamins by leading respected vitamin manufacturers. I have been unimpressed as they always have one or more things wrong with it. Either their multivitamin irritated the stomachs of my patients, caused nausea, caused diarrhea or constipation, did not provide noticeable improvement in energy or it contained some quality ingredients while others were inferior forms. Finally, I got tired enough of all these issues and tackled the problem myself. If I know what it takes to make a multivitamin, then make it yourself. Quit your whining. So I did. And here it is.

I, my wife and the team at Healthy Goods have been using Optimal Multivitamin. My review:
I notice that I can take 4 capsules at a time and not experience any nausea or stomach pain. There is no constipation and I feel a steady energy. Feeling more focused combined with steady energy is the biggest improvement since having started taking Optimal Multivitamin. I don't crash in the afternoon anymore. I take another 2 capsules around lunch time and then another 2 capsules around 4 pm in order to get the suggested serving size of 8 capsules per day. This system works well for me and I believe it will work well for you as well.

Eight capsules per serving? Am I nuts? No. If you want to have an effective daily nutritional supplement without having to open 5 bottles or buy 5 other products, then you need to have a multivitamin with numerous capsules. This is more cost-effecitve, preventative against disease and easier. If you go somewhere, you just need your Optimal Multivitamin, fish oil and vitamin D3. That's it for daily nutrition.

Multivitamins that claim 'One a Day' or 2 capsules per serving are an absolute garbage product. These are severely lacking in the nutrients required for optimum daily health. Multivitamins that have 3 capsules per serving and are in the form of compressed tablets, you are lucky if you get a third of the nutrient amount due to the compression and oils they use which coat their multivitamin.

Optimal Multivitamin is just that. It is a simple name without marketing hype or gimmicks. It is simply an Optimal Multivitamin designed to support your daily nutrient needs for both men and women as it contains no iron. You've actually found a multivitamin that will work well for you. Now all you have to do is give it a try. You will finally experience what a multivitamin should do for you...

Optimal Multivitamin by Seeking Health has been carefully developed to contain the right proportions of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and other nutrients without danger of toxic build-up or other side effects.

Each ingredient is selected in consideration of its absorbability, competitive relationship with other nutrients, allergenic potential, and long-term safety. Certain nutrients such as beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and B-complex vitamins are included in high-potency amounts because of the vital roles they play in antioxidant protection, energy production, the maintenance of healthy blood cells, the nervous system, hormonal balance, and more. Minerals and trace elements are provided in their safest and most bioavailable forms.

Optimal Multivitamin by Seeking Health herbal green food healthygoods also includes important phytonutrients. As a dietary supplement, adults take 3 capsules with breakfast and 3 capsules at lunch and 2 capsules around 3 PM with a snack or as recommended by a health professional. 1. Finally a multi-vitamin I can take! Review by Ana Betty

This has been a wonderful choice for me. It is one of the few multi-vitamins that does not cause nausea or any GI distress for me. I also have food allergies and am so grateful to not have to worry about that with these vitamins. No hidden fillers, just only what is easily digestible and readily available for my body to use! (Posted on 10/17/12)

  2. First Multi I have been able to take, and it has what I need Review by Julia

I have never been able to take a multivitamin. They always contain iron which made me sick to my stomach.
Additionally, this vitamin contains the methylcobalamin and 5-MTHF I need to treat my MTHFR deficiency. Killing two birds with one stone. (Posted on 10/17/12)

  • Calcium content in Optimal Multivitamin at 9/28/11 6:54 AM
    • As a post menopausal woman with concern for osteoporosis, should I supplement this multi vitamin with as additional calcium supplement? I see that it only contains 25% in the full serving of 8 capsules. Also, how large are the capsules? I have a problem swallowing large pills.
    • Hello - Optimal Multivitamin uses the "00" size capsule which is large but not the largest. Print this out and you can see the size of capsules: http://www.erowid.org/archive/rhodium/pdf/gelcap.sizechart.pdf Calcium requires a lot of space as it is 'fluffy.' I recommend the use of Bone Nutrients along side Optimal Multivitamin. You may open the capsules of Optimal Multivitamin and Bone Nutrients - mix in applesauce or any food - and take them this way. Bone Nutrients is also in a "00" capsule. Another thing you can do is take a combination of these two instead of Optimal Multivitamin: - 1 capsule of Trace Mineral Complex http://www.healthegoods.com/trace-mineral-complex.html - 1 capsule of B Complex Plus http://www.healthegoods.com/b-complex-plus.html The capsule sizes for these two are "1" which is two sizes smaller than "00" I highly recommend Vitamin D3 for bone health. Consider taking 1-2 drops of Vitamin D360 a day to help support healthy vitamin D3 levels. Make sure you test your vitamin D3 levels as well - talk with your doctor about this. http://www.healthegoods.com/vitamin-d360-by-seeking-health.html In health, Dr Ben

  • Optimal vitamin at 10/27/11 8:16 AM
    • Should there be any concern with MTHFR patients with the copper in this vitamin? Some would say it can build up in the body.

Also, where is the source of kelp from? Just curious.

      Thanks.
    • Hello - The kelp is from the Atlantic Ocean. The genus and species is Lessonia nigrescens. Copper is needed to balance the zinc. If one simply takes zinc without copper, copper levels may drop too low. There are some individuals who should not take copper - such as those with Wilson's Syndrome. Those with MTHFR, I see no problem with taking Optimal Multivitamin. Have you seen research showing that those with MTHFR should avoid copper completely? Best Dr Ben

  • Vitamin question at 11/1/11 2:09 PM
    • I like the looks of this vitamin, but I did just find out I am high in copper and low in zinc. First, what do you recommend for this? Second, would you consider making a vitamin like this but without the copper and iron?
    • Hello - If you are high in copper and low in zinc, you may simply increase your zinc intake along with vitamin C. Both of these help eliminate copper. Optimal Multivitamin is free of iron already. I may make it without copper but it is very costly to have multiple forms of a multivitamin. I have taken your suggestion seriously and if I have enough capital and interest, I will make an Optimal Multivitamin copper-free. I recommend the use of Optimal Vitamin C as it contains a potent amount of buffered vitamin C in an easy to use powder which tastes excellent. It also contains quercetin and rutin. http://www.healthegoods.com/optimal-vitamin-c-powder.html Simply add a scoop of Optimal Vitamin C to a glass of filtered water and enjoy. You may also add to a 1 liter or so water bottle and drink throughout the day. Make sure the water bottle is made of glass or stainless steel. In health, Dr Ben

  • this vitimin and livon lipo-sopheric vitamin c at 2/7/12 9:28 AM
    • in reading the above questions about your vitamins, one answer from you mentioned separating intake of the multi-vitamin and vitamin C powder. Does this also mean that I should not take the lipo-sopheric vitamin C along with the multi or, since it's encapsulated vitamin C, is it still important to separate?
    • Hello - That is a good question and one that I don't have an answer for. I do recommend though to be safe - it is best to separate taking vitamin C in excess of 500 mg from vitamin B12. Best Dr Ben

  • Folic Acid and MThFR at 2/14/12 8:45 AM
    • I have MThFR and you say not to take folic acid. There are 800 micro grams in my multivitamin I take currently. Is that unhealthy for me? If I take this suppliment too will that cancel it out?
    • Hello - It is not recommended for those with MTHFR C677T mutations to be taking folic acid as the MTHFR enzyme cannot process it completely. It is a good idea to eat foods that contain food forms of folate as they are more active and beneficial than folic acid supplements. If you have the A1298C MTHFR Mutation, it appears that the MTHFR enzyme is still able to produce methylfolate from folic acid. I am still debating this but for now - it is the general consensus. I recommend you take a multivitamin that does not contain folic acid if you have MTHFR C677T. I would switch to a multivitamin that does have methylfolate in it - such as Optimal Multivitamin. You cannot 'cancel' out folic acid unless you eliminate it. That is the only way. In health, Dr Ben

  • Optimal multivitamin at 2/16/12 8:09 PM
    • I have been taking the Homocystex for my MTHFR - one copy of each- and I was wondering if you think taking this vitamin along with the Homocystex is too much to supplement for these? Trying to go the easiest route.

      Thanks!
    • Hello - HomocysteX contains three ingredients while the Optimal Multivitamin contains a plethora of valuable nutrients. It is important to supplement with minerals, antioxidants, all b vitamins. I recommend you consider taking 3 capsules of Optimal Multivitamin with breakfast and 3 with lunch. Then try reducing the amount of HomocysteX and see how you feel. I personally am also compound heterozygous MTHFR and I take 3 capsules twice a day of Optimal Multivitamin along with 1/2 tablet of Active B12 with Metafolin once every three days. That is all I can handle at the moment. We are all different in our requirements of various nutrients - but we all should be taking a multivitamin. In health, Dr Ben

  • Optimal multivitamin at 2/17/12 6:58 AM
    • In response to my earlier question and answer:

You said you take 3 caps of the vitamins twice daily and then 1/2 tab of Active B12 with Metafolin every three days. How do you know what you can handle? How does one know if the Homocystex is too strong? What kind of symptoms do you typically have? I realize we all are different, but just curious what a person might look for.

      Thanks!
    • If you are a sensitive person, you start out on a smaller amount on any supplement and introduce them one at a time. If you find you can handle supplements well, starting on this amount is ok by most everyone. I, personally, am sensitive to methylfolate supplements but I can easily handle 3 Optimal Multivitamin twice a day and a 1/2 tab every three days - but again - some are different because of various other mutations may be present such as COMT, CBS, NOS, MAO A or GAD. You know if something is too strong (or inappropriate) for the moment if you respond poorly. Methylfolate causes the following if too strong or inappropriate: - insomnia - irritability - joint pain - muscle ache - headache If you EASE into methylfolate supplements such as Active B12 with Methylfolate or HomocysteX, the likelihood of causes ill effects are low as you will find the right amount early on. The amount of methylfolate in Optimal Multivitamin is typically very well tolerated by everyone. Best Dr Ben

  • Betaine...? at 4/25/12 12:06 PM
    • Dr Ben:

Is the "Betaine (from 75 mg. Betaine HCI) 57 mg" in this product the same form as the "Betaine (trimethylglycine as TMG)" found in Homocystex Plus?

      Thanks

    • Hello,

The form of Betaine in the Optimal Multivitamin will not be the same as in HomocysteX Plus. In the Optimal Multivitamin the Betaine is blended with HCl to help with absorbtion.

    • I am homozygos 677 and also have a severe case of candida or yeast overgrowth so I am wondering if all the fruit powders make this vitamin innapropriate for my zero sugar anti-candida diet.
    • Hello -

I would consider the Kid's Optimal Multivitamin instead and take 3 capsules with breakfast and 3 capsules with lunch - this makes it an adult multivitamin.

The small amount of fruit powders is likely not going to affect your anti-candida diet; however, it is better to be supportive of what you are doing and not introduce anything which may conflict.

  • vitamins combined with minerals? at 10/18/12 2:10 PM
    • I have always heard that minerals such as calcium and magnesium should be taken separately from vitamins because they will bind with the vitamins and cancel them out. Is this not true of your multivitamins?
    • Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. Minerals are often found in multivitamin formulas. Some are available in chelated form, which means that the minerals are bonded to protein molecules that transport them to the blood stream and enhance their absorption. When mineral supplements are taken with a meal, they are usually automatically chelated in the stomach during digestion. In fact, a good multivitamin and multimineral should be a part of everyone's diet, with additional supplements as necessary. Calcium supplements are more effective when taken in smaller doses spread thoughout the day than taken in a single megadose. Some vitamin companies use a compound called D1-calcium phosphate in their products. This form of calcium is insoluble and interferes with the absorption of the nutrients in a multinutrient supplement. It is not the case in the Optimal Multivitamin from Seeking Health. Excessive calcium intake can affect magnesium absorption and vice versa, supplents should always be taken in balanced amounts, like in the Optimal Multivitamin.

      Have a great day :)

  • Increase heart rate? at 11/27/12 7:41 PM
    • I take 25mg of Atenolol 2x daily for a benign heart arrithymia (PVC's and a few runs of V Tach). I have been advised to stay away from caffeniene, OTC decongestants, alcohol. Will anything in this vitamin increase my HR? I may also have MTHFR, getting tested on the 10th. Could that cause my arrithymia? Also have reaccurant mouth ulcers, anxiety, acid reflux, gastritis, constapation, hiatal hernia, cysts on ovaries often and small one on kidney, sharp pains in head (all scans normal), sluggish, muscle aches, elevated bilirubin (all liver blood test normal), delivered a child with spina bifida occulta. I thought I had an autoimmune for yrs but rheum can't find anything significant. If I do have MTHFR mutation how much methyl folate should I take per day?
This seems like a lot of vitamins to take in one day???
      Thank you!

    • Hello there!

Regarding the Atenolol, you want to avoid any supplements which contain any stimulant-type substances, and the Seeking Health Optimal Multivitamin does not contain stimulants.

There is no set MTHFR protocol for anyone.  If you have been diagnosed with a MTHFR defect, and you want to try taking some methylfolate, what I recommend trying to do is this:

      1. Take small amounts of methylfolate along with methylcobalalmin and work up.
      2. Consider taking 1/2 tablet of Active B12 with Methylfolate. This amount is typically well-tolerated by many.
      3. Increase to a full tablet after 1 week.  Here's a link to the product:  http://healthygoods.com/seeking-health-sublingual-active-b12-with-metafolin.html
      4. Continue to increase the amount taken by 1/2 tablet every 7 days until you feel really good.
      5. If you feel side effects from taking Active B12 with Methylfolate, take 1/10th tablet of Niacin.  Here's a link to the product:  http://healthygoods.com/seeking-health-niacin.html
      6. Work with your doctor on this and inform them what you are doing.

Genetics, lifestyle, diet, medications all play a role in how much methylfolate and methylcobalamin are needed – and these amount can change daily as well.

Finding a doctor that understands this is critical – or you will have a difficult time regaining health – and maintaining it.

If you do test positive for MTHFR, I strongly recommend you find a naturopath or doctor in your location who is experienced working with MTHFR.  This is very important or the wrong recommendations could make your symptoms worse.  Here are some websites to find a doctor near you:

  • Mixing supplements??? at 12/3/12 7:51 PM
    • I am buying your optimal multivitamin for myself, my hubby, and my 2 sons (9&12). I may have MTHFR, getting tested on the 10th...... If I do have the mutated gene, can I take the optimal multi and sublingual active B12 together? I also have a heart arrithymia that i take meds for, would all the B12 increase my HR? I also wanted to buy your probiotic sensitive to take...... Can I take all 3 of these products together? Or should I just buy your L-methylfolate 1000mcg to take with optimal multi instead of the active B12? Thank you!
    • Hello there and thank you for your questions.  Since you are not sure about your exact diagnosis, I do not recommend you begin mixing supplements at this point.  I recommend you wait to know your exact mutation since different mutations require different treatments.  Also, by mixing supplements, if you do have a negative reaction, it will be harder to know what’s causing what.  I suggest you start with the optimal vitamin and leave it at that until you know your exact mutation (if you have one).  At that point, I highly recommend finding a health care provider who is very knowledgeable about MTHFR mutations so they treat your condition appropriately and can guide you with supplement use.  Here are a few websites to help locate a health care provider in your location and ask if they treat MTHFR.

Regarding the probiotic, this is no problem to take this with other supplements.  Probiotics are a wonderful addition to any healthy lifestyle. Remember, probiotics are sensitive to warm temperatures and moisture.  Keep them refrigerated with the lid tightly shut to minimize entry of moisture into the bottle.  Take the capsules after dinner.
