Pantethine, the activated form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), is needed to make Coenzyme A (CoA), an essential cofactor in over 70 reactions in the body. Among its many functions, CoA is required to generate energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins. CoA activates the acetyl units derived from fats or carbohydrates in order to enter the Krebs (TCA) cycle where they can be metabolized into energy. CoA is also needed for amino acids to enter the TCA cycle and for fat to be transported into the mitochondria.
