Seeking Health Alpha-Lipoic Acid

Alpha-Lipoic Acid is a naturally occuring sulfur containing compound made by the body. This antioxidant is found in every cell, where it helps turn glucose into energy. Where some antioxidants, such as vitamin C, are water soluble; and others, such as vitamin E, are fat/ lipid soluble; Alpha-Lipoic Acid is both lipid and water soluble, meaning it can provide intra and extra-cellular protection throughout the body.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid helps regenerate other antioxidants; reactivating vitamin C, E, CoQ10 and glutathione. Conditions such as aging and illness increase dietary need for alpha-lipoic acid.

Why choose Alpha-lipoic Acid by Seeking Health?

Energy Production

Alpha-lipoic acid supports cellular energy production. It is an essential cofactor for several enzymes in the Krebs metabolic cycle that extracts a maximal amount of energy from glucose. It increases glucose uptake and improves it utilization.

Antioxidant Activities

In process of using oxygen to fuel metabolism, the body generates highly reactive kinds of oxygen molecules that can severaly damage (oxidize) bodily proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and oxidative damage. It is both a water and fat soluble antioxidant protecting biological compounds from reduced (gained electrons) or oxidized (lost electrons). These properties make alpha-liporic acid a highly versatile defender against oxidative stress. Alpha-lipoic acid plays an important role regenerating other highly important water and fat soluble antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and coenzyme Q10.

Metabolism

Alpha -lipoic acid is involved in the breakdown of the branched-chain amino acids, leucine, isolecuine, and valine. It also plays an important role breaking down alpha-keto acids.

Detoxification

Studies indicate alpha-lipoic acid increases glutathione synthesis, an important cellular antioxidant that also plays a role in the detoxification and elimination of potential carcinogens, toxins, and heavy metals. Alpha-lipoic acid can bind with unwanted toxic heavy metals, including lead and mercury as well as trace metals manganese, copper, and zinc reducing their potential toxicity when in excess.

DNA synthesis

Alpha-lipoic acid plays an important role in the synthesis of nucleic acids, the building blocks of genetic material (DNA). It is part of the essential metabolic system that gives rise to the pivotal B vitamin folate intermediate, 5,10-methylene tetrahydrofolate.

The National Cancer Institute is currently studying Alpha-Lipoic Acid and its effects on protecting normal cells from the side effects of chemotherapy.

Suggested Use : Take one capsule daily or as directed by a physician. Capsules may be pulled apart and nutrients taken separately.

About Seeking Health, the company

Dr. Ben Lynch, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Seeking Health, is a naturopathic physician. While majoring in Cell and Molecular biology at the University of Washington, Dr. Ben took a trip through the South Pacific and Southeast Asia that changed his outlook on traditional medicine, and his life.

During this trip, Dr. Ben hiked through the forests, mountains and coasts of Tasmania, worked a cattle ranch in the Outback of Australia, and volunteered with Mother Theresa in Calcutta. He lived in Fiji with a family having no electricity or plumbing, experienced the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India, worked a fruit orchard in New Zealand, and returned to America with an impression of a different form of medicine than he had ever experienced with his mainstream medical education.

This profound experience led Dr. Ben to Bastyr University, and he studied the Mind-Body Connection, Environmental Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Epigenetics.

Dr. Ben saw the huge need for people to obtain foundational nutrients, and Seeking Health was born. Without foundational nutrients, biochemical dysfunction occurs and causes symptoms. Doctor after doctor and person after person do not understand the absolute requirement for our bodies to have the tools to maintain function.

  • • Without water, we die.
  • • Without food, we die.
  • • Without probiotics, we get digestive disorders.
  • • Without multivitamins, we become depressed, fatigued and sick.

“If one supports their bodily systems, especially their digestion and mental health, with pure, highly absorbable, well-formulated nutrients, the ability to remain healthy and vital significantly increases. We want your foundation rock solid and we provide the tools to do so.”

-Dr. Ben Lynch, founder of Seeking Health

Seeking Health believes that the root cause for many health conditions and supplements stem from ineffective digestion, environmental exposures, poor diet, and lack of a healthy social outlet and inlet.

  • • Once digestion is restored and optimized with the best probiotics, digestive enzymes, stomach acid and intestinal repair nutrients, one is able to absorb nutrients from foods and high quality multivitamins.
  • • Once environmental exposures are reduced, one is able to reduce toxic burden which then frees up nutrients to work in promoting health and preventing disease.
  • • Once diet is optimized, nutrients flood in, energy increases, blood sugar stabilizes and the immune system balances.
  • • Creating a social outlet and inlet allows the parasympathetic nervous system to regain control over the reactive sympathetic nervous system, allowing countless nutrients to be used proactively and in a protective manner instead of being wasted on producing stress hormones.

Seeking Health is here to see you get better, and stay better. Their true passion is prevention.

Seeking Health is based in Bellingham, Washington and operated and managed by a team dedicated to bringing you better health through the best quality supplements, prebiotics, probiotics, and multivitamins.

Seeking Health brings you effective formulas produced without preservatives, colors, titanium dioxide, coloring, or gluten.

  • peripheral neuropathy at 12/27/12 10:50 PM
    • What are the essential supplements for peripheral neuropathy and in what order and amounts should they be taken for noticeable improvement with diabetic induced pain symptoms?

P.S. The last A1c score which hasn't been for a while I believe was 5. Diagnosis for type 2 was Nov '11 and was up to 7, and BS reading over 400; no idea how long this had been the case since fluke only that diagnosed at all.
    • Hello!

I have some suggestions and I must preface by saying please talk to you doctor before starting any additional supplements.

Therapies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy first address any underlying condition, followed by symptomatic treatment, which it sounds like for you is pain.  A 5% A1c score is very controlled.  Good for you!  On a positive note, peripheral nerves have the ability to regenerate, as long as the nerve cell itself has not been killed.  Symptoms often can be controlled, and eliminating the causes can prevent new damage.  Typically, the cause of neuropathy in diabetes is uncontrolled blood glucose levels.

In general, adopting healthy habits can reduce the physical effects of peripheral neuropathy.  First, I recommend limiting or avoiding alcohol consumption, and other ingredients to avoid include sugar, high fructose corn syrup, processed foods (enriched & refined), and hydrogenated fats (aka: trans fats), artificial sweeteners, and MSG (monosodium glutamate).  Also limit foods sprayed with pesticides--buy organic.  They may all negatively impact the nervous system.  Individuals suffering from peripheral neuropathy should have a balanced intake of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids.  Most people consume excess Omega 6, so increasing Omega 3 is typically recommended.  I suggest an Omega 3 high in EPA.Exercise can help control blood glucose levels, increase circulation, reduce cramps, improve muscle strength, and prevent muscle wasting.  After exercising, always check your feet for irritation, blisters or sores.  If any of these are apparent, treat them immediately, as neglecting them could result in infection.  Although you don’t want to overdo your protein intake, I encourage you to eat some protein at every meal for muscle maintenance.  Consider a daily protein intake of approx. 0.8-1.0 grams/kilogram body weight.  Here’s a protein option to go along with your food intake:  Whey protein isolate with L-carnitine:  http://healthygoods.com/seeking-health-whey-slim-protein-isolate-with-l-carnitine.html#tabreview

Consider taking a quality probiotic to promote and support healthy bacteria in the digestive tract.  Probiotics are necessary to strengthen the immune system.  If you prefer a powder form, take ¼ teaspoon of ProBiota 12 Powder after dinner for 1 week and then increase to ½ teaspoon for a month.  Then reduce back down to ¼ teaspoon for long term.  http://healthygoods.com/pro-biota-12-powder-maximum-support-200-billion-cfus-twelve-species-60-grams-seeking-health.html

If you prefer capsules, consider taking 1 capsule after dinner every night.  If you tolerate 1 capsule, with time you may try increasing to 2 capsules.

Consider having your doctor test your vitamin D levels.  Vitamin D3 supports a healthy immune system, provides support for healthy bones and hormone formation, and supports healthy mood and neurotransmitter production.  Each drop of this Liquid Vitamin D360 contains 2000 IU.  The amount you take is dependent on your blood levels when you have them tested.  You could start with 1 drop per day before determining your levels.  http://healthygoods.com/seeking-health-vitamin-d360-2-000-iu-per-drop.html

Alpha-lipoic acid is a vitamin-like chemical called an antioxidant and is possibly effective for use with diabetes and nerve-related symptoms of diabetes including burning, pain, and numbness in the legs and arms.  It may take 3 to 5 weeks of treatment for symptoms to improve.  Be aware: alpha-lipoic may lower your blood sugar levels so close monitoring is recommended.  http://healthygoods.com/seeking-health-alpha-lipoic-acid.html

  • glutathione or percursors? at 3/21/12 3:48 PM
    • Hi, me again :)
Throughout the years I have used a whey product by Well Wisdom for
the glutathione production, and I have also had glutathione by IV. The reason being was for the challenges of chemical sensitivities. Recently, I tried a couple of packets of the Lypo-spheric glutathione and did ok with
      it.
After some research and looking at your site my question for you is:
(finally huh!) in your opinion would it be more beneficial to take
Alpha-R- Lipoic acid and NAC for the glutathione purposes, or just
take the Lypo-spheric glutathione as the straight form of it?
Test results show that my liver's phase 2 detoxification aspect has
problems with detoxification and glutathione production.
    • Hello - I would do both. Since you have issues making your own glutathione, taking it straight is recommended. I also think you should support your body's ability to produce its own through: - selenium - NAC - vitamin C - alpha-r-lipoic acid In health, Dr Ben
