What is a prebiotic?

Prebiotics are food for probiotics- the beneficial bacteria that help with digestion and support your immune function. These living organisms, present in foods like yogurt and kefir - or available in supplement form, need fuel to thrive. 

Prebiotics are naturally found in high-fiber foods such as artichokes, bananas, berries, garlic and greens, or grains such as oats, chicory, and flax. These foods all contain a form of fiber not normally digested by us. This fiber passes into our intestines, where the beneficial bacteria (probiotics) present in our system use them as a food/ fuel source to grow and thrive. The prebiotics feed the probiotics, and the probiotics go to work keeping your immune and digestive systems healthy and strong.

ProBiota Base contains Inulin and Oligofructose; inulin-type fructan prebiotics commonly found in chicory, onions, asparagus, bananas, garlic, and leeks. Inulin and oligofructose are used as an energy source by healthful intestinal bacteria (especially bifidobacteria), which ferment them into short-chain fatty acids. These short-chain fatty acids beneficially increase the intestinal acidity (lower pH) and provide critical nourishment for the colon. They also enhance the absorption of essential minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, in the colon; assist intestinal reabsorption of water, and enhance intestinal barrier function. In addition, by promoting the proliferation of healthful bifidobacteria, inulin-type fructans help increase fecal bulk and optimize stool consistency.

ProBiota Base also contains the following dietary fibers:

Larch Arabinogalactan: Larch arabinogalactan (Larix occidentalis), commonly known as the larch tree, contains a unique type of soluble dietary fiber that enhances immune function. This fiber, arabinogalactan, can also be found in numerous plants, including carrots, radishes, and tomatoes, as well as many medicinal herbs. Arabinogalactan enhances the immune system by blocking viruses and bacteria from attaching to cell membranes, stimulating natural killer cell activity, and increasing the number of immune cells, particularly macrophages, present in the blood system. Research indicates arabinogalactan fiber may also have important benefits for the colon, support the growth of beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria, and increase short-chain fatty acid production.

Beta-Glucan: Beta-Glucan is a type of soluble dietary fiber that is found in baker’s yeast, oats and barley fiber, and mushrooms. Research suggests that beta-glucan has immune supportive properties. Beta-glucan may also modulate the immune response to a wide spectrum of pathogens, including fungal (Candida albicans), Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli microorganisms. This product provides beta-glucan from purified baker's yeast.

About Seeking Health, the company

Dr. Ben Lynch, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Seeking Health, is a naturopathic physician. While majoring in Cell and Molecular biology at the University of Washington, Dr. Ben took a trip through the South Pacific and Southeast Asia that changed his outlook on traditional medicine, and his life.

During this trip, Dr. Ben hiked through the forests, mountains and coasts of Tasmania, worked a cattle ranch in the Outback of Australia, and volunteered with Mother Theresa in Calcutta. He lived in Fiji with a family having no electricity or plumbing, experienced the Himalayan Mountains of Northern India, worked a fruit orchard in New Zealand, and returned to America with an impression of a different form of medicine than he had ever experienced with his mainstream medical education.

This profound experience led Dr. Ben to Bastyr University, and he studied the Mind-Body Connection, Environmental Medicine, Functional Medicine, and Epigenetics.

Suggested Use
