There is now significant recognition about the critical importance of the developing healthy bacterial flora in the neonate and infant as it can largely determine future health concerns.

From having a sterile G.I. tract at birth, the neonate acquires microbial flora from the first day of life, and this flora is then responsible for a major part of the development of the entire infant immune system. It is now acknowledged that imbalances in the flora of the neonate may significantly increase the risk of childhood allergy and susceptibility to infectious disease. Consequently, it is now seen as imperative that the infant has a competent composition of microflora from the first day of life and that this can be achieved by supplementation with probiotic organisms daily from birth.

HLC Neonate has been developed specifically for the child up to 12 months of age. It contains the HLC strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus plus Bifidobacterium infantis, which, as its name suggests, is the strain of Bifidobacterium most suited to the newborn infant. L. acidopilus will target and stimulate the mucosal immune system in the upper part of the G.I. tract and the B. infantis will stimulate the immune system and become established in the lower gut.

HLC Neonate is in a very concentrated form so that only 100mg is required to give a full dosage of 2 billion HLC organisms. The only carrier is lactose, which is milk sugar and is assimilable by all infants. The product can be administered to the infant in formula milk, expressed breast milk, or by simply allowing the child to suckle powder from a finger or knuckle that has been dipped into the product.

Notice for persons with dairy sensitivities: HLC probiotics manufactured by Pharmax are grown in a nutrient base that includes dairy.  This nutrient base is removed after the microorganisms are grown.  These products are tested at the end of the process for potential allergens, and traces of dairy are found to be in the parts per million.  These products therefore are unlikely to induce a reaction due to traces of dairy, except in persons with severe allergies.

  • Lactose Overload at 7/26/11 8:31 PM
    • Will the HLC Neonate 6 Grams help with Lactose overload? I have a 3 month old baby who has pretty severe gas and spit up. My wife produces way too much foremilk. I just bought some Lactase Enzymes drops, but was curious if this product worked better. Does the bacteria break down the lactose in the milk?
    • Hello - You are exactly right about the beneficial bacteria helping process the lactose. However, I must inform you of a better probiotic than HLC Neonate for this purpose. The HLC Neonate is pretty good but not as potent as the ProBiota Infant probiotic. There are 10 billion beneficial bacteria per 1/4 teaspoon in 10 different strains in ProBiota Infant vs only 4 billion beneficial bacteria per 1/4 teaspoon in 4 strains in HLC Neonate. ProBiota Infant is here: http://www.healthegoods.com/pro-biota-infant-powder-60-grams-seeking-health.html ProBiota Infant is also lactose free while HLC Neonate contains lactose. Give 1/4 teaspoon of ProBiota Infant each day ideally in the evening but it doesn't really matter. It is better in the little one than in the bottle. Make sure mother also takes an excellent PreNatal, quality fish oil, 6,000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily and a probiotic. All these nutrients pass through the mother's breast milk and into baby. I highly recommend ProBiota 12 capsules - 1 taken in the evening after dinner by Mom: http://www.healthegoods.com/probiota-12-maximum-support-50-billion-cfus-twelve-species-probiotic-60-vegetarian-capsules-seeking-health.html Vitamin D360, a liquid Vitamin D3, contains 2,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per DROP. Take 3 drops daily. This way the mother and child receive sufficient vitamin D3 together: http://www.healthegoods.com/liquid-vitamin-d360-1-oz.html Optimal Fish Oil capsules - take 2 daily with a meal - anytime of day: http://www.healthegoods.com/optimal-fish-oil-liquid-8-ounces.html Prenatal Pro by Designs for Health contains highly active forms of minerals and vitamins which are key for the mother and baby: http://www.healthegoods.com/prenatal-pro-180-vegetarian-capsules.html I commend you for understanding the importance of probiotics for your infant. Not only do the probiotics help process lactose, but they also help bind toxins, create vitamins, support immune function and help prevent harmful bacteria and yeast overgrowth. The probiotics should help your little one process the milk more efficiently especially when combined with Lactase Drops. You can simply place a drop in your infant's mouth just prior to breastfeeding. This may work best by placing a drop of Lactase Drops on the mother's nipple. One drop should suffice. Try that first and if you need more, then do two drops. Be sure to give the ProBiota Infant every day to the little one until he/she is two years old. This way you'll have supported your infant's immune system development in the most ideal way possible. These first two years are the most important in helping prevent eczema, autoimmune disease and asthma. Should you have further questions, please do ask. In health, Dr Ben

  • nweborn constipation at 5/11/12 11:56 PM
    • I have a 1 month and i need to know what to do for her constipation she is on similac sensitive milk and she is still not having a bowl movement my doctor told me to give her karosyrup and that's not working either and my doctor told me to give her a glycerin suppositories and i did and it work but the next day or two she still did not have a bowl movement. I need help please help me.
    • Hello -

I recommend switching her to a goat milk formula.

Also I recommend you consider the following:

      1. Lactase Drops: consider adding this directly to her formula to help digest the lactose. This helps a lot of little ones who have constipation or stomach pains from formula or breastmilk.

      2. ProBiota Infant: consider giving her 1/4 teaspoon in the evening after feeding. Balancing and supporting benefiical bacteria in the digestive tract is critical for many functions: immune, digestive, neurological, dermatological and others.

Be sure not to feed your infant anything else besides formula, breastmilk or what the doctor advises.

      In health,

      Dr Ben
