Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are important for normal functioning of all tissues in the body, and are needed for fetal growth and brain development. Two of these EFAs, linolenic acid and linoleic acid, cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained through food or supplement sources.

While both Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are needed for normal functioning of our bodies, our Standard American diets tend to be overly heavy in Omega-6 fatty acids, with not enough Omega-3 fatty acids.

Most people think of fish oils as a source of Omega-3 essential fatty acids, but there are plant-based options for vegetarians and vegans available as well. Plant sources of Omega-3 can come from nuts and seeds like flaxseed, hempseeds, and walnuts, and vegan EFA formulas may contain algae as well.

Black currant oils, borage oil, and hemp oils can be plant-based sources of a less commonly found Omega-6 fatty acid that has shown to have anti-inflammatory effects: gamma-linoleic acid (GLA).
