Prenatal Multi-Vitamins: Nutrional Supplements for Expecting Mothers

Nothing can inspire a woman to care about her health more than a pregnancy. As it does this very important work of making a baby, a woman's body will need greater amounts of the necessary building blocks that are found in nutrients like folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, and iron. Prenatal multi-vitamins are customized to meet the special needs of pregnancy and help the baby grow. Even if an expectant mother can manage to eat a nutritious diet, it's difficult to get enough of these crucial vitamins and minerals through diet alone. Prenatal multi-vitamins serve as a sort of insurance by meeting these increased nutritional needs to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Most prenatal multi-vitamins will include folic acid. This important B Vitamin is widely recognized by doctors for its essential role in preventing health defects that affect the spinal cord, like anencephaly and spina bifida. The earlier, the better--women who are trying to conceive are advised to begin taking it daily because folic acid is necessary during the earliest stages of pregnancy when the baby is forming its spine. Supplementing with folic acid will also significantly reduce other risks like certain heart defects, cleft lip palate, and preeclampsia. The folic acid provided by prenatal multi-vitamins is actually better for pregnant women than what is naturally found in food because the synthetic version has been found to be more easily absorbed by the body.

Prenatal multi-vitamins will also commonly be formulated with minerals like iron and calcium. Supplementing with iron is recommended to help expectant mothers make extra blood so that the baby doesn't become anemic, which can cause the child to be born too early or too small. Boosting your intake of calcium and vitamin D will also help support healthy development, especially by building strong bones.

Prenatal multi-vitamins help cover possible gaps in your diet to help the baby have all the building blocks it needs to be healthy. This is especially important for expectant mothers who have a dietary restriction, an underlying medical condition or who have developed any complications with their pregnancy. Getting ready to welcome a child is a time to really focus on your health and prenatal multi-vitamins are a vital part of giving your baby the best possible start in life.
