Stress. We've all got it, to one degree or another. But managing that stress is the key to wellness, especially when it starts affecting your physical health.
Stress begins in the brain, where cells send a message through your nervous system to increase your heart rate, constrict blood vessels, inhibit digestive secretions, and prompts glands toproduce cortisol. Excessive and chronic stress can wear out adrenal glands, disrupt the normal sleep cycle, and lead to overproduction of LDL ("bad") cholesterol.
Stress tends to deplete levels of B vitamins. Foods high in folic acid, like asparagus, can support normal production of neurotransmitters. Avocados, another food rich in B vitamins, are also a great source of healthy fat and potassium, which can support blood sugar levels. Fruits full of vitamin C and other antioxidant compounds can help protect and repair cells from stress related damage.
