What are Ketones?
Ketones are created when the body converts fat to a usable energy source. These ketones can be used by the body as fuel. Typically, the body only creates ketones when there are no carbohydrates available to use as energy, or the body it is not able to utilize the carbohydrates (such as in diabetics).
What are MCTs?
MCTs or medium chain triglycerides, are beneficial saturated fats that contain a shorter amount of carbon molecules than long-chain fatty acids (also known as triglycerides). MCTs can have anywhere from 6-12 carbon molecules. The four medium chain triglycerides are caproic acid (C6), caprylic acid (C8), capric acid (C10) and lauric acid (C10). These MCTs are digested easily, do not have to go through the same digestion process as long chain fatty acids (although it is argued that caprylic acid does have a more complicated digestion process than the other MCTs).
Medium chain triglycerides stimulate the production of ketones in the body, initiating your body’s use of fat as fuel.
Where are Medium Chain Triglycerides naturally found?
Medium chain triglycerides are naturally found in some animal products and in a significant amount in coconut oil. All four medium chain triglycerides are found in coconut oil, with lauric acid (C12) being the most predominant.
What is special about MCT oil?
MCT oil is a concentrated formula made of only caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10), and sometimes only of caprylic acid. Because lauric acid (C12) may act more as a long-chain fatty acid in regards to its process of being digested (making it not as readily available as fuel for the body), lauric acid is left out of MCT oil. This concentrated source of C8 and C10 quickly stimulates the production of ketones and becomes a source of energy for the body.
